El Refugio Mezcaleria truly is a refuge. They are holding down authentic Mexican culinary traditions (mostly from Oaxaca and Guererro) in a town that has quite a bit of gringo-fied Mexican. The owners, Noel and Rachel are warm and engaging. When eating there I honestly felt l like a guest in their home, sitting in their garden sipping Mezcal leisurely. Their Mezcal (which they go to the ends of the mainland Mexico to procure) is excellent by the way. Do a tasting, it's worth it! The food is also amazing. Pork in mole verde is the best I've had by far I have had and is a proper Oaxacan dish. Their pozole (on Thursdays) will cure any ailment and their Sunday brunch (e.g. eggs over sweet potato pancake with a delicious salsa) is easily the best in town.
A true chef. A cultural experience. A must!! The portion size is plentiful and the price point spot on.
So friendly and knowledgeable. The organic mescal flight is a must. We loved the molito and the corn side dish! We also got to try what must me Mexico’s version of rhum agricole, which was so cool and different. They take such care of what they are doing. Go!
